How to Apply for a Grant

  • Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

    • You must be an IRS-registered 501(c)(3) public charity or a public entity serving U.S. communities. See eligible types.
    • Fiscal sponsors are accepted.
    • You must register with The Nonprofit Cooperative.
    • You must attend at least two free professional development events before applying.
  • Step 2: Prepare Your Application

    You’ll need to submit two parts:


    Video Application (5–7 minutes)

    Answer these four questions:

    • What is your mission and vision?
    • What impact are you making?
    • How would this grant help?
    • How would you use these funds?

    * No PowerPoints; phone/Zoom videos are fine.

    * Passion over polish — we want to hear your story.


    Written Application

    • Basic nonprofit information.
    • Most recent IRS Form 990 (or bylaws if you’re a startup).
  • Step 3: Submit Your Application

    Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 PM EST on the posted deadline.


    Late or incomplete applications are not considered.

  • Step 4: Review Process

    1. NCF staff narrows applicants to the top five per grant.
    2. The Grants Committee selects one finalist per grant and makes recommendations to the Board.
    3. Finalists may be asked to provide additional documents:
    • Bylaws
    • Last 990
    • Financial statements (from the last 2 years)
    • Operating budget
    • IRS determination letter
    • Leadership team and Board list
    • Audit (if applicable)
  • Step 5: Award Notification

    • Board approves grantees.
    • All approved applicants receive an award letter.
    • Grants are typically announced 3–4 months after the application cycle closes.
